From othercat

I've done this one before, but it's fun.

1.) Give me a pairing.
2.) Give me an AU setting.
3.) I will write you a three-sentence fic.

As always, if you don't know if I know the fandom, just ask.

Sketches 1/2

A long time ago, I asked for sketch requests. Well, 'name a fandom, and I'll draw you my favorite character'. I also used it as practice for poses. I'm half done, and used the end of a sketchbook to switch.

Have a meme

I saw [personal profile] othercat do this on Tumblr, so...

Name two series you know I've read/seen, and I'll script out a crossover*.

* This may actually be a fusion of the types of 'Characters from Series A were born into Universe B and meet the cast'.

Meme from Tumblr

Name a fandom and I'll sketch my favorite character from it.

I just downloaded Sketchbook Express, and I want to play with it.

WIP First Line Meme

In which I go through my WIP folder and post every first line, no explanations. Okay, anything that looks like Doctor Who fic was written by request of a friend in a pan-fandom RPG, so may be wildly OOC since I'm working from her writing and not the canon -- that's the only explanation I get to give.

Maybe someday I'll finish them.

Also, feel free to ask me about them, play guess the fandom (on ones where I don't name people/places), or whatever. Maybe it'll be incentive.

Have a meme

Comment saying "MEME" and I will tell you the following:
1. Something random about you.
2. Which color you remind me of.
3. My first memory of you.
4. What random character I associate with you.
5. My favorite thing about you.
6. What fandom I associate with you.
7. Challenge you to post this on your journal.

It's worth noting that my answers to #7 will probably all be 'I don't see a need to give you orders'. ^_^

Sep. 8th, 2011

1. Reply to this post with "NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT", and I will pick five of your icons.
2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.
3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.
4. This will create a never-ending cycle of icon glee.

Three people gave me icons, and there were some repeats, so...

Meme and Fanfic Stuff

I need to kick my writing muse, so have a meme. Taken from [livejournal.com profile] earthstar_moon

1) Give me a pairing. (added: can be a gen pair of characters)

2) Give me an AU setting.

3) I will write you a three-sentence fic.

Contemplating signing up for [livejournal.com profile] girlsavesboyfic (Which also allows 'girl saves the day/world' this round) and/or [livejournal.com profile] smallfandombang. The first I'd have to look through the list of Things to Write for something suitable. The second involves seeing if I have any horribly obscure fandoms with long fic ideas.

At least the latter is slow-paced and won't involve me writing when I should be working on graduating and finding a job.

WIP Meme

WIP MEME: post a little bit of each WIP you have (or as many as you want to pick). No context, no explanations.

Long )

I need to find more of my original stuff that needs editing. I think I'm at the point where I don't hate my first-finished NaNo, just need to rip out the good bits for something.

Question Meme

▸ Comment with "PIERCE THE HEAVENS!"
▸ I'll respond by asking you five questions so I can get to know you better.
▸ Update your journal with the answers to the questions.
▸ Include this explanation in the post and offer to ask other people questions.

1. How did you get into anime?
In high school, I joined the SF club and this was how I made my first real friends (still have some of them, actually *waves*). A lot of our activities were 'watching things', and some of the club were anime fans, so I saw some movies (Vampire Hunter D, Akira, and Appleseed) and a couple episodes of things. Including, ironically, Slayers, which I liked but I was a poor high schooler so didn't feel like shelling out the money for VHS tapes.

Anyway, one of my friends, Sara, was a Big Sailor Moon fan. And also Pokémon. And my friend Cassie was a Tenchi Muyo fan. So I decided to start watching those, and got into the upswing of anime on TV -- around the time the end of Sailor Moon R (and S) started airing.

Some of it was fandom -- by that, I mean my friends. It was also what got me into Star Wars (and Babylon 5), since Cassie is a giant SW fan. Others were the fact I found I enjoyed serial TV, and anime was my first exposure to it. But, by the time I graduated, I was interested enough to attend the UNL anime club.

2. What's your favorite mythological animal?

Selkie. I have a strong love of marine mammals, so seals, otters, whales and matinees, and the ocean, so stories about people who live under the ocean fascinate me.

3. What is your favorite video game?

Earthbound is a classic. As is Pokémon. Earthbound just is a well-put together game plot, even if the endgame battle system is... eh. Pokémon... well, it's a good way to kill time, and the monsters are so damn cute.

4. Besides Avatar, do you enjoy any other western cartoons?

Um... not currently. I don't watch much TV, so it's mostly what people bring me via recs. Friends are trying to get me into the Monster High webisodes...

5. Have you ever been outside of the states?

Yes, though just to Europe. My dad did a postdoc in Germany, so when I was a toddler we lived there for less than a year (Mom brought us back early). I also have family in Ireland, and have visited twice, and went with Dad and my stepmother.

This year the BIG planetary science conference is in France, so I want to get the funding to go.

Writing Meme!

Taken from [livejournal.com profile] sabinelagrande

Give me one of my own stories, and a timestamp sometime in the future after the end of the story, or sometime in the past before the story started, and I'll write you however many words of what happened then, whether it's five minutes before the story started or ten years in the future.

My work can be found in various places, but [archiveofourown.org profile] beccastareyes and [personal profile] invoking_urania/[info]invoking_urania are good places to start.

So, the interview meme. [livejournal.com profile] padparadscha asked me questions, I gave answers, and I can try to ask you questions too, if you like.

A lot of astronomical rambling goes here )

As a sort-of gift from me for you and to celebrate the International Woman's Day... let's play a game. Give me a female character from any fandom you know I know, and I'll write a drabble about her. :)

Another meme

Taken from several people...

Name a fandom that I am familiar with and I will tell you:

(Addition: If I have a 'doesn't slot into male or female' OTP or OTPs, I'll mention it.)
My endgame OTP:
My original OTP:
My crack OTP:
My guilty pleasure OTP:
My anti-OTP:

Some may be OTXs, or just Favorite Pairings*. And feel free to to cast a wide net on fandoms, even if you don't know if I know them. If all else fails, you'll get my opinion from three episodes, Wikipedia and Fanfic Rants.

* I tend to distinguish OTP as the pairings I won't split up. But a lot of fandom seems to use it as a Favorite Pairing. The two aren't always the same for me -- for example, Slayers fandom.

Meme from dark-skada

I promise to send something handmade to the first 56 people who leave a comment here. They in turn must post this statement and send something they make to the first 5 (or 6) people who comment on their blog post.

The only other rules are that:

1) it must be handmade by you and,
2) it must be sent to your 5 people sometime within 2011.

Probable crafts are small crocheted things (hats, scarves, gloves, socks), or art (digital or painted) or possibly sewing.

Bored... have a meme

We may know each other but do we know each other? Here is your chance to ask me any question you want and have me answer it honestly! Seriously. ANYTHING.

I need to do an artdump to [personal profile] invoking_urania

May. 3rd, 2010

So, I'm here.

So, I made it back to Boston. Obviously. I'll try to get a write-up of the conference with 'interesting science I learned'. Because I had a good time. And, yes, I will include my own talk.

I also spent Saturday Night doing 'Ask an Astronomer -- LIVE' at a local bar with three other astronomers and a physicist. Fun, though there was some inadvertent comedy when I mentioned a transit of Venus in 2012*. Speaking of, Ann in our department is doing a Science Café with a local Mayan archeologist on 2012 -- the archeologist will handle the 'what the Mayans actually believed, as far as we can tell from their writings' and Ann gets to handle all the stories she hears about how people think the world will end and why they don't work (as well as "2012 in pop culture" and "answering emails from people scared by History Channel 'documentaries'").

* I also got to be the only one who could answer the 'what did you discover in the last year', because we had a theoretical physicist (I got my model to give self-consistent results!), an instrument builder (I took my instrument to a telescope!) and a first year grad student.

Oh, and the meme I did: all but two were answered, so I thought I'd give the answers.

"Government employees read their employer's financial information, steal a business vehicle, and go off to violate their now-former boss's purchasing agreements." is Marvel's NEXTWAVE: Agents of H.A.T.E. Let me put it this way, if Watchmen was Neon Genesis Evangeleon, deconstruction the tropes of a genre, NEXTWAVE is Gurren Lagaan, turning the tropes up to 11 and still managing to be awesome.

"A young woman's loss of sanity causes concern for a friend of her missing parents." is Girl Genius by Phil and Kaja Foglio. Not sure if the 'loss of sanity' is the manifestation of Agatha's Spark, since Sparks aren't generally sane by normal standards, or the fact Agatha currently has a copy of her mother's personality lodged in her head, after discovering her mother had conducted a reign of terror on the continent before she was born. Either thing concerns the Baron Wulfenbach.
