One of the neat things about very-short-form fanfiction (drabbles and flash fiction) is that you can do a lot based on the fact your readers know the story and characters already. So you can foreshadow or fill in details, or just plant an idea with very few words.
Just something I've noticed in a bit of my recent flash fiction work -- something I wrote for avatar_contest and fma_fic_contest. Heck, even 'Soon', which I wrote for fma_fic_contest, does it a bit.
Actually, it's something that all drabbles and flash fiction work with -- using the reader's preconceptions, assumptions and so on to fill in the bits of story that the words won't let you tell. It's easier to notice in fanfiction, because the assumptions are spelled out.
